Amazon's Project Kuiper is a planned constellation of 3,236 satellites in low Earth orbit, designed to provide broadband internet much like Starlink. After years of preparation, Kuiper began deploying production satellites in 2024-2025 and is racing toward initial commercial service.

Number of satellites
Kuiper: 3,236 planned. Starlink: 7,000+ active and growing.
Operator
Kuiper: Amazon. Starlink: SpaceX.
First commercial service
Kuiper: ramping in 2026. Starlink: live since 2020.
Launch providers
Kuiper: ULA Vulcan, Ariane 6, Blue Origin, SpaceX. Starlink: SpaceX only.
Backbone
Kuiper: AWS cloud integration. Starlink: SpaceX-operated terrestrial gateways.
Terminal
Kuiper: phased array, multiple sizes including a $400 target consumer dish.

AWS integration as the wedge

Amazon's real differentiation is integration with AWS. Enterprise customers running cloud workloads in AWS regions can route data directly through Kuiper without traversing the public internet. This combination of constellation and cloud is unique to Amazon and a real advantage for some enterprise use cases.

The launch contract logistics

To deploy 3,236 satellites, Amazon contracted the largest commercial launch deal in history — over 80 launches across multiple providers. Vulcan Centaur, Ariane 6, New Glenn, and Falcon 9 will all carry Kuiper satellites. Vulcan Centaur is the highest-contracted provider.

Why two giant constellations exist

Both Starlink and Kuiper see broadband as essential infrastructure with hundreds of millions of underserved users. Two constellations means redundancy for governments and enterprises, more competition on price for consumers, and growth headroom across both networks.

Frequently asked questions

When will Kuiper offer service?

Initial service is targeted for 2026 with broader rollout following deployment of more satellites. Customer acquisition is leveraging Amazon's consumer brand reach.

How will Kuiper price compare to Starlink?

Amazon has stated a goal of consumer terminals near $400 and competitive subscription pricing. Final pricing will be announced near service launch.

Can Kuiper work with cellular?

Amazon has not announced a Direct-to-Cell equivalent. Kuiper currently focuses on dish-based fixed and mobile broadband.
