Ariane 6: Europe's New Heavy-Lift Rocket Explained
Ariane 6 is the European Space Agency's next-generation heavy-lift rocket — the successor to Ariane 5. Here's how it works and what it launches.
Ariane 6 is Europe's new heavy-lift rocket — the successor to the highly reliable Ariane 5 that launched the James Webb Space Telescope. Built by ArianeGroup for the European Space Agency (ESA), Ariane 6 is designed to be more affordable, more flexible, and competitive with Falcon 9 in the commercial market.
Ariane 6 specifications

- 63 m (207 ft)
- Configurations
- A62 (2 boosters) · A64 (4 boosters)
- Core engine
- 1 Vulcain 2.1 (LH2/LOX)
- Upper-stage engine
- 1 Vinci (LH2/LOX, restartable)
- Solid boosters

Maiden flight
Ariane 6 made its first orbital flight in July 2024. The flight delivered most of its payloads successfully, though an issue with the auxiliary propulsion unit prevented the planned upper-stage deorbit. ESA has continued operations and is increasing flight cadence.
What Ariane 6 launches
- European institutional missions (Galileo, Copernicus, ESA science missions)
- Project Kuiper satellites for Amazon
- Commercial GEO communications satellites
- Ride-share missions and constellations
Why Ariane 6 is not reusable
Ariane 6 was designed before SpaceX's reusability cadence was fully apparent. ESA is now developing the Themis demonstrator and a future reusable European rocket, but Ariane 6 itself is expendable.
Frequently asked questions
When did Ariane 6 first launch?
Ariane 6 made its successful maiden orbital flight in July 2024 from the Guiana Space Centre in Kourou.
Is Ariane 6 reusable?
No, Ariane 6 is expendable. ESA is developing reusable rocket technology under the Themis demonstrator program.
How does Ariane 6 compare to Falcon 9?
Ariane 6 has roughly the same heavy-lift capacity in its A64 configuration, but at a higher per-flight cost since it cannot be reused.
